Testimonial:

The Harrison Build, Cheshire

"We decided to rip out the old carpet and completely renovate our staircase, and the Solid European Oak Stair Treads from Timbersource were the perfect choice. You can instantly feel the quality underfoot—there’s absolutely no flex or creaking, just solid, heavy timber. The character in the European grain is beautiful and hides the day-to-day dust and wear perfectly. They arrived machined to our exact thickness, which saved our joiner a lot of prep time. It’s transformed the hallway into a real feature."

What is a stair tread?

A stair tread is quite simply the part of the stairs you tread on! it tends to be a wide board becuase it has to be deep enough to take a large shoe size and allow you to step on safely. Wide oak boards are difficult to find and can curl a bit when they are thin so for stability these can be made from a few pieces joined together.

What is a roundover?

A roundover is the term used to describe a machined curve to the top and bottom edges along one side of a board which give it a rounded finish. This takes off the sharpe edge and makes a neat soft edge to where your feet may come in to contact.

Why is European Oak good for stairs?

European Oak is very durable and tough becuase it has grown slowly for over a hundred years making it very dense and strong. With oak being very strong and hard it will sustain plenty of foot traffic in heels, shoes and will last a long time. Oak has been used for centuries as stair treads and many of the oak stair treads used on listed buildings have not needed to be renewed.

Can you oil european oak?

European oak stains or oils very well and a good quality oil will preserve and protect oak for many years. Oil can also help to give oak a surface sheen to make cleaning and maintenance a lot easier. Wood finishes such as Danish oil, Osmo oil, Odies oil, Rustins oil, furniture wax, bees wax and finishing wax amongst many others work very well with Oak.
