European Oak has a course grain texture which means its not ideal for painting. It would not only require more sanding and prep work but also will show the grain up more as the moisture from the grain pronounces the grain structure. There are many more good timbers to paint and with European oak being one of the most expensive desirable timbers it would perhaps be a bit wateful to paint. European Oak is ideal for oiling.
