What is Poplar timber good for?

Poplar is one of the best hardwoods for painting due to its fine grain texture that can be planed very smooth with very little sanding required. It has little to no knots, so knot treatment not as prevalent as pine. Poplar is porous and soaks in a primer without then furring up the grain so minimal sanding after priming.

How long will Poplar last outside?

Poplar will not last long outdoors untreated and in wet areas will begin discolouring after 4-8 months. Even when treated there is a strong possibility it will start to rot. It is perfect to use for any interior cladding or panelling project.

Can you paint Poplar cladding?

Poplar cladding is great for painting.

What is the best treatment for Poplar wood?

A wood preserver is suitable for Poplar but painting with a good quality paint would be the best and strongest treatment.

Can I use Poplar for cladding?

Poplar is great for cladding because it is lightweight, strong and good for painting. It also comes in very wide and long boards making the waste minimal and good coverage with few joins.

Why choose American Poplar?

Poplar is an extremely versatile wood which is very easy to work and turn, and is great for nailing, screwing and gluing. It also handles paint, stains and enamels without issue, and dries quickly and easily.

Appearance

The sapwood is white, and in second-growth trees, very wide; the heartwood is variable in colour, ranging from olive green to yellow or brown, and may be streaked with steel-blue and/or purple.

Durability

Poplar is tough and resistant to wear, and it can withstand a lot of punishment before splitting.

American Poplar / Tulipwood is known for being a very light, cost-effective hardwood, making it ideal for cabinetry and cupboards. It has a subtle texture and mellow cream to light green colouring which is often picked out with purple and black, but is also very easy to paint.
