How do I buy decking boards?
We supply ready made off-the-shelf premium deck boards made from Yellow Balau which is a very hard wearing dense hardwood. Balau does not need to be treated and will last for many years with little to no maintenance.
Balau is a Malaysian hardwood with natural durability and will gradually weather to a silver-grey colour.
These boards are sold with 2 different grooved styles. There is a reeded option with thin shallow grooves and a castle option with deep grooves. The grooves are often thought to act as a grip underfoot but they are mainly to provide a stress release to stop the boards curling when they are thin.
The dimensions can range from:
- 19mm x 90mm Reeded
- 21mm x 145mm Smooth both face
- 21mm x 145mm Reeded/ Reversible
- 21mm x 145mm Smooth/ Castle
- 28mm x 145mm Reeded/ Reversible
How can I buy timber for bespoke decking?
The best way to buy decking as a bespoke design and style is to buy your own timber. Buying timber for decking is really not that complex and mainly comprises of planks over a sub frame. The thickness of the planks is the main key factor.
If you are building a sub frame you must make sure the joists below the deck are spaced adequately to provide a strong sub structure. Then you can establish the thickness of planks/boards.
Using a hardwood for decking will allow a thinner board than softwood as they are more dense and will not flex. Please consult your joiner/builder for their advice on thickness of decking boards before buying. They will know what thickness to order based on the sub frame they intend to build.
