What is American 'white' Ash?
American 'white' Ash Introduction: timber is mainly used for interior furniture and joinery, particularly where bending-strength is required. The colour of Ash boards will vary from a white appearance through to brown.
The natural order Oleaceae includes a number of species of the genus Fraxinus or ash, whose timber is characterised by good strength elasticity, toughness, stiffness and hardness, allied to relatively light weight. The following are the principal species found in North America:
Black ash Fraxinus nigra
Green ash Fraxinus pennsylvanica
White ash Fraxinus americana
American Ash timber is imported in FAS grade in imperial thicknesses of sawn 1", 1 ¼", 1 ½", 2", 2 ½", 3" & 4". Kiln dried imported packs normally contain random widths from 4" to about 9" and are in predominantly even lengths i.e. 8', 10', 12' as this is the standard method of American hardwood production. Occasionally we are able to obtain other lengths up to 14' long and also premium widths.
Latin name Fraxinus spp, Fraxinus nigra, Fraxinus pennsylvanica, Fraxinus americana
Also known as American Ash (America), black ash (Fraxinus nigra), green ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica), white ash, Canadian ash (Fraxinus americana), brown ash (Fraxinus nigra), red ash (Fraxinus pennsylvanica)
Environmental Not listed in CITES. Available from well-managed sources.
Distribution Occurs in Canada from Nova Scotia to south-western Ontario, and in America from New England, the Middle Atlantic and Central States
American Ash Properties
The Tree The tree reaches a height of 15m to 18m or a little more, and a diameter of about 0.75m
The Timber The sapwood is almost white in colour and the heartwood varies from light brown to reddish-brown rather similar to European ash. but a little lighter in weight, about 670 kg/m³ when dried
Working Properties Machines well, Good for nailing, screwing and gluing. stains and polishes well
Physical Properties Good overall strength, Excellent shock resistance, good for steam bending
American Ash Drying Dries with little distortion
American Ash Durability Not durable. Non-resistant to heartwood decay, sapwood is liable to powder post and common furniture beetle attack, heartwood is moderately resistant to preservative treatment.

Please note American grading rules allow width tolerances in the sawn sizes, e.g. 7" width stock may vary from 6 5/8" to 7 ½" yet still be charged as 7". Therefore, we encourage customers to advise us of the minimum 'planed finish' width they want so that our tally staff can select accordingly.
What is FAS Grade
The FAS grade, which derives from an original grade "First And Seconds", will provide the user with long, clear cuttings - best suited for high quality furniture, interior joinery and solid wood mouldings. Minimum board size is 6" (152mm) and wider and 8' (2.44m) and longer. The FAS grade includes a range of boards that yield from 83.3% (10⁄12ths) to 100% clear-wood cuttings over the entire surface of the board. The clear cuttings must be a minimum size of 3" (76mm) wide by 7' (2.13m) long or 4" (102mm) wide by 5' (1.52m) long. The number of these cuttings permitted depends on the size of the board with most boards permitting one to two. The minimum width and length will vary, depending on species and whether the board is green or kiln dried. Both faces of the board must meet the minimum requirement for FAS.
