What is Iroko Timber and how is it used?

When embarking on any project, it is crucial to have the right kind of timber for your purposes. With that in mind, we have decided to make Iroko this month’s featured timber.

This robust hardwood is good for both panelling and other carpentry projects.  This timber is characterised by the distinct golden brown colour that’s produced when the heartwood is exposed to light.

Why choose Iroko timber?

Iroko timber is produced from the wood of the Iroko tree, which originates from the west coast of Africa. The timber is very durable and is used for outdoor gates and other forms of infrastructure.

Another of the key uses for Iroko timber is domestic flooring. As the timber is more economical than other hardwoods like Teak it can be used to create inexpensive furnishings.

The resistance of Iroko is one of the reasons why it is good for exterior projects. It works well for both joinery and is commonly used in boat making for decking and floorboards.

Whilst Iroko is a robust timber that takes nails and screws well, the interlocked grain can make it difficult to work with tools. This is one of the reasons we recommend getting expert help when using Iroko timber for domestic furniture projects.
